The Family Guy Follows Its Script
July 24, 2007
DVD is a boon for Family Guy, as discs often hold a lot of the episode material deemed too naughty for TV. That point was driven home during a July 23 script reading of the upcoming 100th episode of Family Guy on
Monday in Beverly Hills. Featuring multi-voice talent and show
creator Seth MacFarlane, the reading helped hype Fox Home Entertainment’s Sept. 18 release of the fifth season of
Family Guy on DVD.
Lightening rod topics in the original, unedited read script include abortion, a possible Rob Lowe-James Caan romance, and Meg’s X-rated use for hot dogs. Also, a character intended to be Sandra Bullock yells out “What the fuck?” when she opens a mailbox.
The episode centers around baby Stewie’s attempted murder of his mother Lois on a cruise ship.
“The abortion part is eight times as long,” said MacFarlane of the original script. “Some of this stuff will only be on the DVD. The swearing will only be on DVD. It is judiciously edited for TV.”
This is fine by MacFarlane who credits DVD for fueling the popularity of the Family Guy franchise. The show was dropped after its early seasons, and later DVD sales helped resurrect it on Fox.
“DVD has become such a big part of Family Guy,” MacFarlane said.--Susanne Ault
