The Voice of Space Ghost Speaks
July 20, 2007
I had a chance to speak with renowned voice actor Gary Owens last week, he of the classic Sixties yuk-fest Laugh-In and, more importantly for me, the 1966 animated series Space Ghost, wherein his rich tones
portrayed the voice of title comic book character. Warner issued Space Ghost and Dino Boy: The Complete Series on July 17.
“As far as Space Ghost goes, it was one of my favorites of all time,” Owens told us. “Fighting various villains from Sandman to Robot Master to Hijackers to Iceman was the greatest thrill of all.”
Long involved in voicework for cartoon series—“I had been doing all the shows for all the cartoon on the network at the time, he said.—Owens has long enjoyed his experiences in the world of animated entertainment
“Working with cartoonists is like working with people in an alternate universe,” he said. Space Ghost was a great show and a very popular show. Hanna Barbera had wonderful animation, great music cues and some fine writing.”
Today, Space Ghost is best known as a, gulp, talk show host on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which was
broadcast regularly on the Cartoon Network from 1994 to 2004 and still pops up occasionally in reruns. The show finds Space Ghost and a few of his old villains chatting it up with celebs and other newsmakers, with everyone’s tongues pressed firmly in their cheeks. Owens was involved in the project, but only in its earlier stages.
“Yes, I did the pilot for Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” he laughed. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do it, but I was too busy with other projects.”
