Activision Puts Heat on Sony to Just Go Lower the PS3 Price Already

June 22, 2009

The $399 Playstation 3 is forever being rumored to drop in price. Most usually a slashing of $100. But the pressure has been turned up for Sony to actually go through with it, due to threats from Activision.
The video game publisher's CEO Bobby Kotick recently warned Sony chief Howard Stringer that if PS3 doesn't cut its price Activision will consider stopping its title flow to the console. Activision's thinking is that a high-priced PS3 cuts its consumer base, and consequently limits sales of its game titles.
This news comes courtesy of a Times Online report, via PaidContent.org.
Kotick said, "They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.”
Game on, Sony! Your move.
I wonder if Sony will take Activision at its word or interpret this a big bluff? The cost of developing video games is as steep as ever, and it makes sense for Activision to recoup those costs in the form of higher title sales. However, Sony has suffered from falling electronics sales with the recession, and likely will have problems cutting the price of anything.
This should be an interesting showdown!
