New York Magazine Disses Fox Rental Plan
April 28, 2009
Some rentailers are busy passing back and forth the popular last page section, 'The Approval Matrix' of a recent April edition of New York magazine. In the 'Approval Matrix' in the April 20 issue, New York places Fox's just launched stripped-rental version strategy in the 'despicable' column.
That feeling matches with a number of rental video stores, who've been upset that they've had to offer several Fox titles without many bonus features to customers. Sell-through outlets, on the other hand, have been able to hawk premium editions, holding digital copy among other extras often lacking on the rental configurations.
For example, with Fox's April 21 Notorious Blu-ray, rental customers got to view the theatrical version only. But those who bought Notorious on Blu-ray could watch either theatrical or director's cut of the film.
As New York describes the situation for rental store management: "20th Century Fox introduces rental DVDs without special features - it saves them money, but you have to pay the same price."
I'm curious though how much mainstream, regular consumers are aware of the difference between Fox rental and sell-through versions. I admit I always say that I'm going to watch the bonus features...but sometimes never get around to it. Will some of it be missed? Maybe. But I guess we'll know for sure, if Fox ever decides to reverse its policy and roll out the same editions to rental and sell-through consumers.
