Is This the Hold-Up for BD Live and PS3?
March 5, 2008
It looks like Sony is about to soon launch a film and TV dowload store for PS3 users. Gamer site
Kotaku has what looks like a mock-up of the service interface. Featured titles were all Sony, including
Superbad,
Seinfeld,
Spiderman 3 and
Across the Universe. Content seems to be able to be bought or rented.
This enhancement for PS3 makes sense considering its arch nemesis Xbox 360 has been offering online film and TV downloads for some time.
However, I wonder if this PS3 expansion has worked to cut the company's free time to develop the BD Live Web connectivity upgrade to its BD player. Or maybe it's all one in the same - you can download films onto your PS3 and hey, you can also download this trivia game that heightens excitement for this or that BD title.
I don't blame Sony for configuring the download store first and then worrying about BD Live. There are just a handful of BD titles including such Web-enabled features. Yet digital film/TV sales and rentals are cropping up in all sorts of places, recently including Apple TV's high-def feature rentals.
According to some reports,
such as DVDTown citing Home Cinema Choice, PS3 will get the BD Live upgrade by this summer. That timing is meant to coincide when the first BD Live set-tops launch from Panasonic and Sony. But based on months-long expectations of BD Live coming to PS3, I'm not holding my breath yet for the upgrade.
