Blu-ray Player Ads Abound - Are People Biting?July 6, 2009 The latest circulars have been chock-full of Blu-ray player mentions, as Best Buy and others were especially hoping to attract long holiday weekend shoppers. These days most players seem pretty reasonably priced, with a lot of the latest 2009 generation models priced between $250 and $299.Older generation models, such as Best Buy's in-house branded Insignia and Samsung P1500 are even cheaper at $168, and $149, respectively. One big question I have is whether people are jumping to purchase the players. All of the Blu-ray player deals are competing with just as sweet high-def TV offerings. You can save $100 right now on 40-inch Samsung 1080p sets at Best Buy - as just one example. With everyone's money so tight these days, I wonder what people are prioritizing these days? Amazon.com top electronics sellers provide some clues - Blu-ray players seem to be doing well, but many not oustandingly so. There are three Blu-ray players in their top 100 products - Sony's S360 at no. 24, Panasonic's DMP-BD60 at no. 27 and LG's BD390 at no. 84. They're behind a lot of iPod-related products and GPS navigational items. I will definitely check back in with retailers in the next few weeks for a more solid look at Blu-ray's progress on shelves. In response to: Blu-ray Player Ads Abound - Are People Biting? CaW2 commented: I think people are buying, BUT we have to remember Blu adoption is directly tied to HD adoption. If you don't have a HD set, make that a HD set of at least 40-in, then it is pretty pointless to purchase a Blu-Ray player.

DVD had the advantage of being compatible with every NTSC standard def set of the last 40 years.
