All-in-One TV/Blu-ray players
September 24, 2009
Toshiba and Best Buy's in-house Insignia brand appear to be set to release combo HDTV/Blu-ray players in the near future.
Thanks to Blu-ray.com, it looks like Toshiba's combo will be demoed at the upcoming CES show. It'll be dubbed 'Cell Regza' and will be interestingly powered by the same processor found in the Playstation 3.
Blu-ray.com, via Smarthouse, includes quotes from Toshiba's president talking up the combo set as 'its flagship model.' The chief insists it will offer the same game changing experience for consumers as when they experienced color TV for the first time.
This could be the start of a trend as Engadget and Blu-ray.com spotted a 'coming soon' mention of another HDTV/Blu-ray player, this time from Insignia. By the time I tried to check out the product, with the model name NS-LBD32X-10A, it appeared that Best Buy had taking down the Web page. But it looks like this one features a 32-inch LCD screen, and is expected to be priced at $599. There is an Ethernet connection, indicating that it will be a BD-Live player.
I think these products are excellent ideas. Consumers are gravitating towards Blu-ray players that do more than one thing, such as those that stream Netflix. Why not just throw a TV into the mix while you're at it?
Manufacturers are already offering free Blu-ray players with purchase of same-branded TV sets. So just engineering the two together seems to simplify the whole process.
