350GB Discs On the Horizon?

October 15, 2009 TDK is announcing that its successfully developed and demoed a super-sized 350 GB Blu-ray Disc, according to various reports. That would put it at about 7 times roomier than the current capacity 50 GB Blu-ray Disc.
The big 'IF' though is the fact that currently there are no manufacturers making players that would be able to handle such a 350 GB disc.
Although the idea of this huge capacity disc is neat - we can get all of the Pirates of the Caribbean films into one place, etc. - I'm doubting this concept is going to fly.
Manufacturerers, and studios for that matter, are killing themselves trying to get people to buy today's Blu-ray technology. I doubt they'll be motivated to go back to the drawing board to convince consumers they need entirely new players to enjoy content.
Plus, what seems to be driving Blu-ray player sales nowadays is the fact that it's a multi-function box. It's not so much about the high-definition discs by themselves. The best-selling models are the ones that let you watch discs as well as stream other services, such as Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand. And then Playstation 3 one ups a lot of devices with its cramming of Blu-ray, gaming and downloading all into one product.

Robert Smith commented:

The new disks are supposedly compatible with existing players so, in theory, compatibility should not be a problem. In practice I imagine there would be some issues. But I think that the manufacturing chain is not ready to make upgrades to what they are doing, and they are still having problems and expenses with supporting Blu-ray. Finally, it is not clear how movies would need a lot more space in any fundamental way.
