Not Yet Big In Peoria
October 15, 2007
High-def title selection is definitely expanding, but it might be spotty if you live outside of a major metropolitan area. During a recent VB retail check in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a F.Y.E. store only offered used copies of Blu-ray and HD DVD. The outlet had stopped ordering new titles because they "just don't sell" in that neighborhood, said store staff to VB. After a two-week experiment, the F.Y.E. staffers said that the high-def titles just weren't clicking with customers. A Best Buy in Albuquerque was stocked with both formats, however.
Rural, somewhat lower-income, consumers could be less willing to pay the steeper prices for high-def than upper income bracket city dwellers. But making it more confusing, selection can vary within different parts of one big city. In Los Angeles, the Hollywood Borders offers several racks of Blu-ray and HD DVD titles. But the one in my nearby suburban home of Glendale, Calif. doesn't offer any high-def yet.
