All About Steve - DVD and Blu-ray Review

By Ed Hulse -- Video Business, 11/18/2009

FOX
Street: Dec. 22
Prebook: now
> Miscast Sandra Bullock works overtime to generate laughs.

Sandra Bullock is getting a bit long in the tooth for fluff like All About Steve—she’s a good 10 years too old to be playing the ditzy crossword-puzzle writer who still lives with her parents. When her character gets a schoolgirl crush on a TV-news photographer (Bradley Cooper), the resultant antics—which include what these days qualifies as stalking and harassment—are a bit embarrassing and have a feeling of desperation. Thomas Haden Church grabs a few laughs as an opportunistic reporter, and Bullock is able to keep the film afloat only by virtue of her inherent likeability.

Shelf Talk: The Bullock name still carries weight, especially with older viewers outside the current theatrical-audience demographic. Cooper, whose stock has gone up considerably in the wake of The Hangover, will help keep this one turning as well. On its merits alone, Steve is strictly filler.
