Motivator teams with indie Westlake for ’08 push

By Marcy Magiera -- Video Business, 10/1/2007

OCT. 1 | Life coach and infomercial guru Tony Robbins will make his first major push at retail next year through indie supplier Westlake Entertainment.

Select Robbins programs have been in limited retail distribution in the past, but the Westlake deal marks the first time Robbins’ full programs will have been available in stores. Westlake will handle North American distribution and sales to English-speaking territories internationally.

The company will target warehouse clubs and other big-box retailers for Love and Passion: the Ultimate Relationship Program, available only as a six-DVD/four-CD set beginning Jan. 8. Price and prebook date were not available at press time.

Westlake also will distribute Anthony Robbins Personal Coaching Collection of six DVDs and eight CDs as a set and individually. Other programs will be available later in 2008 and 2009, Westlake officials said.

Westlake is a former budget supplier that has engaged primarily in indie film distribution since it was purchased by industry veterans Luke Stefanko and Larry Cohen last year. The company also plans to bring other self-help products to market under a new brand it hopes to establish with the Robbins lines, Stefanko said.

Westlake execs declined to discuss previous sales of Robbins’ books, DVDs or audio programs, but the speaker’s Web site says he has written five books, published in 14 languages, and sold more than 35 million audiotapes. His five TV infomercials have “continuously aired on average every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day somewhere in North America since their initial introduction in April 1989,” according to the site. Robbins claims to have reached 50 million people from 80 countries with his books, multi-media products and live appearances. His seminars are held in one or more cities most weekends, with people paying $1,000 or more a piece to attend.

“He’s one of the most famous TV brand personalities of the last quarter century,” Westlake principal Larry Cohen said. “Worldwide, he reaches tens of thousands of people annually.”

The Robbins organization will help market the retail DVDs.
