Retailer signs deal with Hewlett-Packard to provide technology
By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 6/14/2007
JUNE 14 | SANTA MONICA, CALIF.—Hewlett-Packard has signed with Trans World Entertainment to provide movie download services for the DVD and music retailer, HP Digital Entertainment Services’ Bradford Auerbach said during a panel at Digital Hollywood Wednesday.
Trans World is the second retailer HP has signed for its movie download service. The company already provides the back-end technology and operations for Wal-Mart’s movie download site, which launched in February. HP is building its download business as a back-end that can be used by a number of different retailers under their own branding.Trans World didn’t immediately return a call to comment. The retailer currently offers music downloads through its Web site.
Auerbach didn’t say when Trans World would begin offering downloads.
Auerbach said HP still plans a summer launch of its manufacturing-on-demand service, wherein it would manufacture a DVD when a consumer orders it. The service would be integrated into the download services offered through retailers, so that consumers could choose a movie and then choose whether to buy a digital copy or DVD, depending on what format it is available in.
The company is still negotiating with studios to license content for the service.
