JULY 2 | TV series on DVD is still a popular segment of the market, and the hottest new shows from the past season are making their way to store shelves soon.
Universal will release the first season of the hit TV series Aug. 28.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will deliver the breakout hit Heroes on Aug. 28 (prebook July 24) on DVD ($59.98) and HD DVD ($99.98) and Tina Fey’s sitcom 30 Rock on Sept. 4 (prebook July 31; DVD $49.98).
Buena Vista Home Entertainment will debut drama Brothers & Sisters on Sept. 18 (prebook July 24) and comedy Ugly Betty in a Bettyfied Edition on Aug. 21 (prebook July 3). Both are priced at $59.99.
And Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bow Brad Garrett-starring sitcom ’Til Death on Aug. 21 (prebook July 26; DVD $39.95).
Of course, this last season also had some shows that sparked but faded. The Black Donnellys garnered lots of buzz when it debuted on NBC because of its creator, Paul Haggis, whose Crash had just prior been awarded the Best Picture Oscar. About four Irish brothers in New York’s organized crime, Donnellys didn’t get enough ratings to survive on TV, but the complete series will be released on DVD by Universal on Sept. 4 (prebook July 31) priced at $49.98.
New Line Home Entertainment went a different route for its canceled Blade TV show, which aired on Spike and is based on the vampire hunter character from the three movies. New Line is releasing a feature-length, unrated version of the season premiere as Blade: House of Chthon on Sept. 18 (prebook Aug. 14; DVD $19.97).
Meanwhile, older show Two and a Half Men comes to DVD for the first time on Sept. 11 (prebook July 17; DVD $44.98) from Warner Home Video.
Buena Vista will release third-season sets of ABC favorites Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost on Sept. 4 (prebook July 10), Sept. 11 (prebook July 17) and Dec. 11 (prebook Oct. 16), respectively.
And MGM Home Entertainment ends Stargate SG-1 with the season 10 DVD release on July 24 (prebook June 27; DVD $49.98) through 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
