CEDIA: Samsung to launch dual-format in Q4
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 9/6/2007
SEPT. 6 | CEDIA: DENVER—High-def hardware selection quickly expanded over the course of the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Assn. Expo here this week, as Pioneer and LG Electronics unveiled third- and second-generation models, respectively, and Sharp entered the fold for the first time with a Blu-ray Disc player.
To street later this month, Sharp’s Aquos BD HP20U will be one of the more modestly priced Blu-ray players at $549.99. Highlights include 1080p playback and a ‘quick start’ feature.
Speaking at a CEDIA press conference, Sharp executives said they can be successful with the Aquos player, which will be neither the cheapest nor the highest-end available on the market.
“You can turn on and get to the menu image in 10 seconds,” said Bob Sagliore, senior VP of marketing at Sharp. “Competitively, we see that as a major advantage.”
Pioneer and LG join a growing crowd of manufacturers swiftly churning out new versions of players.
Samsung at CEDIA highlighted its first dual-format offering, the $999 BD-UP5000 Duo HD player, which will street this fourth quarter.
