> Horror spoof about a boy and his Lassie-like zombie pet.
Billy Connolly plays the title role in this amiable zombie comedy, which does a good job extending a one-joke premise to feature length. The setting is an idealized, Norman Rockwell America in which zombies are kept as pets, servants and even lovers. Connolly does an excellent job of fusing Lassie and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein in his “pet” character, while the adults in the community (Carrie-Anne Moss, Dylan Baker and Tim Blake Nelson) put across the Canadian film's spoof of Eisenhower-era contentment.
Shelf Talk: Fido plays as a combination satire and children's film, so kid viewers should take to it with glee—were it not for the frequent rifle shots used to dispose of rogue zombies. Older viewers who've kept up with the slew of modern zombie pictures, straight (28 Days Later ) and comic (Shaun of the Dead), will enjoy this clever spoof of the genre.
