Prebook: now
> Godard’s debut film, a landmark in cinema history, gets the Criterion treatment.

The technical innovations—most of them due to an extremely low budget—that appear in Jean-Luc Godard’s debut feature might seem antiquated now, but that is because Breathless stands with only a handful of other films (Citizen Kane, Potemkin) as one of the most influential in history. This two-disc set includes nearly three hours of bonus material and a letter-perfect restoration of the film—with only a dubious, bizarrely literal English translation of the film’s famous last lines as a possible point of argument. The supplements examine the film from several different angles, but the standout inclusion is an 80-minute 1993 French TV doc, which presents a thorough look at the film’s production, capped off by an interview with its star, Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Shelf Talk: Film buffs probably already own this film in some format, but they won’t hesitate to check out this release for its flawless new restoration and ample supplements. A solid bet for any Francophile’s Christmas wish list.

Crime, B&W, NR (mature themes), 90 min., DVD $39.95, French with English subtitles
Extras: vintage interviews with Godard and stars, Chambre 12, Hotel de suede documentary, Godard short, essays, cinematographer and assistant director interview
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
First Run: L, 1960, NA
