> Uneven direction mars an otherwise creditable indie effort aimed at faith-based, African-American consumers.
In this drama, Bishop Calvin Jacobs (Clifton Powell), a recovering alcoholic, takes desperate measures to save his financially strapped church—even accepting a loan from a Turkish businessman who wants assistance in a money-laundering plan. Popular rapper DMX and sexy Vivica A. Fox have substantial supporting roles, but the film’s effectiveness is undermined by slipshod direction and poor sound recording. It’s a worthy but uneven effort.
Shelf Talk: An urban drama that soft-pedals sex, language and violence, Father of Lies seems to be positioning itself as a film for what might be called the Tyler Perry demographic. It’s being marketed not only through such African-American Web sites as BlackFilm.com and UrbanFilmPremiere.com, but also to church groups in select urban markets. A multi-platform ad campaign will target BET among other broadcast venues.
