Can you see 3D at home?

January 26, 2009

VB sister pub TWICE has an interesting blog post from Mitsubishi exec Dave Naranjo.

In it, Naranjo addresses the challenges to bringing 3-D video home. He references a panel he participated in recently at CES, saying "It was interesting to note that all panelists seem to believe that a 3-D standard for Home Video (Blu-ray Disc) was forthcoming and possible for 2009. Several companies showed 3-D content playing back from a Blu-ray player, but the devil is in the details."

Those details include how to supply a high-quality 3-D experience in the home using Blu-ray players and the existing installed base of  HDTVs, even though the equipment is not, well, equipped to do that. To get the best experience, you need 3-D-ready TVs, which most homes do not have. Even DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg--who promises all DWA movies will be in 3-D beginning this year, believes it will be years before consumers are ready to reinvest in TV sets with 3-D capability

There are no 3-D standards yet for packaged home media, but they are being worked on, and will have to work with existing Blu-ray players and displays.

Meanwhile, near a dozen 3-D releases will hit theaters this year, lending urgency to the development of home standards.
