Apple's Air Is Here, Film Rentals Not So Much
February 1, 2008
Apple has pushed back the launch of its film rental service to sometime in February, explaining it needed to make some software tweaks over the next couple of weeks. The company did tout the fact that it's shipping now to retail the ultra-thin MacBook Air laptop.
The rental selection and rental terms remain unchanged from when company chief Steve Jobs first announced the service for Apple TV during January's Macworld conference. After a free software upgrade, Apple TV users will be able to choose from 1,000 films, 100 of which will be in high-definition, for a price that ranges between $3.99 and $4.99 per movie.
Going by current media chatter, I'd say most folks seem most wowed by the MacBook Air, as it seems stylish enough to walk down a catwalk if it wanted to. But I'll be waiting to see what happens with the film rentals, because with the cheaper $229 Apple TV price, I say it's something that more people can immediately afford to enjoy than the steep $1,799 MacBook Air.
