No Copying for Old Men
March 4, 2008

My mother-in-law and her 80-year-old boyfriend watched an illegal copy of No Country for Old Men before the Oscars. They said their friends bought it on the subway. What do I do now, report 80-year-olds to the police for receiving stolen property? My sister in another state got a copy too, from someone who was selling DVDs for $5 in her workplace. The movie doesn’t come out on DVD legitimately until March 11. When my sister saw The Simpsons on an illegal copy before its official DVD release, I told her she was harming the industry. She said she thought it was OK because the guy got it through a download from another country. Downloads have become extremely popular – just not the kind the industry makes money on. What should be done about this?

As I understand the law, it's illegal to MAKE and SELL illegal DVDs. It's not illegal to BUY them. It's great that the industry has brainwashed you to the extent that you really want to turn in your own mother-in-law for buying a bootlegged DVD! I think you have other issues about your mother-in-law that you're not mentioning. We don't live in Nazi Germany and there's no crime here, so fortunately, there's no one around who you can turn your mother-in-law in to.

Actually - purchasing stolen property and being in possession of stolen property are against the law - especially if you know it (i.e. "it is only a bootleg".) A great deal of people and corporations are trying to make a living off the legal creation and distribution of movies...I am sorry you (Dan Zee) feel it is legitimate to belittle that.

I have to protect my 77 year old mother here. It was The Bucket Squad and her neighbor handed it to her. Being 77 and having a lot on her mind, she sometimes loses track of street dates. It looked like the real thing and she watched it. By the way, she and her boyfriend also go to the movies once or twice a week. I ma here Mom, with bail money. :)
