A Shot of Joost
April 5, 2007
I got a look today at the beta version of Joost, the Internet TV channel from the founders of Kazaa that landed a deal with Viacom earlier this year. There's a handful of shows from MTV (lots of Laguna Beach episodes) some Comedy Central shows like Stella, National Geographic specials and then some niche content. The video quality leaves much to be desired and the shows I picked (Laguna Beach and to balance it out a National Geographic special on Egyptian Tombs) kept stalling so that I gave up like less than a minute in. Love that streaming!
But I have to say though, there are some compelling possibilities that will have me checking back. The navigation is fairly simple, though disappointing in that you can't fast forward or rewind through shows. But it's easy to browse different channels and choose a show. I was able to pull up the chat feature, which I can kind of see myself using when I want to complain about something that happens during a show.
Overall, it's an interesting concept, but it's got a ways to go in improving the quality and playback. Of course, it's still in beta, so I'm sure that's being worked on.
I do love that there's a Mac version of it!
