AppleHDTVs and other rumors
June 1, 2009
Sure
Microsoft stole the spotlight today with a series of
Xbox game announcements at E3, but rumors continue to pop up online about some new video features Apple might unveil next week at its developer's conference and beyond that will place it at the center of the entertainment universe.
The first rumor, first reported by a tipster on
Salon, is that it will add the option of downloading movie and TV shows directly to the iPhone. Right now, iPhone users have to download video to their computer and then transfer it to their phones if they want to watch video. Following Salon's report,
AppleInsider reported that the feature will be available on the next generation iPhone operating system and that Apple support staff have been trained on the new feature.
Meanwhile, late last week Piper Jaffrey analyst Gene Munster
put out a report speculating that Apple is developing a networked television, which would include TV, movie, music and gaming features in one device. Munster expects Apple to introduce the TV by 2011.
Munster also believes Apple will update its AppleTV set-top by the end of the year to include DVR capabilities. He bullishly predicts Apple will have sold through 6.6 million AppleTV units by the end of this year. That's far and away above projections of 500,000 units
other analysts have estimated Apple has sold.
