MOD POD to Sell Digital Content in Stores
January 9, 2008

MOD Systems, which has a pilot program to deliver digital music at Best Buy stores, has begun selling its new "MOD POD" consumer kiosks to retailers.

A 10-inch by 8-inch touch screen device, the MOD POD enables customers to search, sample and download digital content onto media storage devices, while inside a retail store.

The $1,000 consumer kiosk is sold by MOD Systems as part of a "turnkey solution" for retailers to manage a virtual inventory of digital content at both the corporate and store level to augment their physical inventory.

The complete solution, in addition to the MOD POD, includes the MOD Systems data center, a corporate server, a device to burn CDs and DVDs, the MOD player, and the MOD Web Store, which is a website where customers can order online and pickup in store or for delivery. Some or all of the components can be implemented depending on the retailers needs.

MOD Systems can also provide the content, which at this point is still mostly music, although MOD Systems says it is currently ingesting movie and TV content from major and independent studios. Its digital media assets includes millions of tracks from independent and major music labels, such as Warner Music Group, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, EMI Music, The Orchard, the Independent Online Distribution Alliance, and others.

“Our MOD POD provides a dynamic way to select and download content,” said Mark Phillips, MOD Systems CEO and CTO. “Whether you’re looking to purchase music, a TV show, video, or a full-length feature film, the MOD POD is the next stage in retail content delivery and is helping reshape the entertainment-content-buying experience. Its compatibility with a large number of devices makes content more accessible than ever, as it is not restricted by proprietary formats.”

The in-store MOD POD can download content onto media devices such as MP3 or portable video players, memory cards and USB drives, and mobile phones. Its multi-media touchscreen provides a secure in-store shopping experience.

The MOD POD was recently named an Honoree in the CES Innovations 2008 Design and Engineering Awards in the Computer Hardware category, which recognizes the most innovative consumer electronics products in the industry.
