Hand me the remote, er, iPhone

September 1, 2009

Apple's iPhones can now be used as remote controls for Roku set-top boxes. Garage openers may be next.

iPhones and iPod Touch devices can be programmed to use their Wi-Fi features as a way to control Roku boxes that are used to stream movie titles from Netflix and Amazon.com, HackingNetflix.com reported late last week.

The 99-cent application that converts iPhones to clickers is sold by DVPRemote. Because of the Wi-Fi capability, the Roku box can still be controlled even if it's inside an entertainment center or cabinet.

Closely-held Roku sells a $99 set-top box that it says can access about 50,000 digital titles from Amazon.com and Netflix.
