From Romania, With Horror
May 11, 2009
One of more provocative titles in the third installment of Lionsgate’s recently released After Dark Horrorfest, Perkins 14, like many straight-to-DVD horror films, was shot in that faraway land that regularly yields shelves worth of new genre titles, Romania. Though he acknowledged that the economics of independent horror filmmaking demands that many projects be produced overseas, Southern New Jersey-based director Craig Singer had another idea as to where he wanted to shot the film.
“I wanted to shoot in Philly—I really didn’t want to go to Romania,” Singer said. “The only thing that’s a constant when shooting somewhere like Romania is that things go wrong. And if you’re out of your element, if you don’t know the language, then you’re screwed.”
“Once in Romania, I needed to put a team together with local crew and a few folks I brought from America,” he
continued. “We didn't have the time or money to fuck around…”
The affable Singer told me that there were no major setbacks during the shoot (he had traveled to Romania months earlier and scouted locations, etc) and he was ultimately happy with the foreign experience. And, yes, he would do it again (and probably will as it’s the first of a two-picture deal he made with After Dark CEO Courtney Solomon, both of which stipulate shooting to be conducted in Romania).
“He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Singer laughed. “And why would I? What I do is such a privilege, not a right.”
