$6000 Blu-ray Player Special

July 31, 2009

Marantz is launching its latest line of Web-enabled Blu-ray players ranging from $550 all the way up to $5999.99.
I don't doubt that this $6,000 offers pristine, just about perfect high-definition quality. Audio freaks should love its 'Sharc Digital Signal Processors,' which ensure ultimate HD encoding. It also regally sits on 'machine milled copper feet,' helping to stabilize motion and further boost sound quality.
I'd just love to find out what sorts of people would seriously consider buying this model. Is it just a tech geek aspirational purchase? Sort of like what Luis Vuitton purses are to many women? If that's the case, then that's cool and real helpful for the Blu-ray format - if people are dreaming and desperate about owning it.
I think Blu-ray sometimes suffers from not having that sort of 'X' factor to make it a must-have item along the lines of a Wii,  iPhones, GPS navigational systems, etc.
I don't really know how to infuse it with such extreme desirability. Maybe we need to come up with our own 'I'm a Blu-ray' commercial - to show that anyone who's anyone needs a Blu-ray player.
Sure, that's silly. But give me some other ideas!

The people that would buy a player like this are the same kind of people that would buy a custom home theater, top of the line gear, where they listen with there ears and not with just there eyes. Not the kind of people that would listen to there I-pod on there car stereo, they would listen to a real CD.

Can not be done.

Blu-ray represents a substantial, though incremental improvement on prior technology. It allows you to do what were doing anyway, just at a higher quality.

iPhone, GPS and whatnot are gamechangers in that they are devices that allow you to do things that you otherwise could not.

If wider adoption is the goal, the means are pretty much laid out... larger catalog, cheaper players, more features that actually add value.
