Blockbuster makes Blu-ray pitch

July 28, 2009

Bring out the big guns. Please.

That's essentially what Blockbuster was saying in a post on its company blog last week when it suggested that a dozen movies of the big-budget adventure variety be put out on Blu-ray.

Under the heading "Movies We Want on Blu-ray," the Blockbuster blog included the original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Saving Private Ryan and Lord of the Rings, with Indiana and Rings said to be possibly coming out on Blu-ray in time for the holidays.

Jurassic Park and Alien also made Blockbuster's wish list, which included three of the top 14 grossing movies of all time, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Blockbuster is making its pitch for good reason, as Blu-ray sales were arguably the only bright spot in a home-entertainment industry in which first-half revenue fell about 4% from a year earlier, according to the Digital Entertainment Group. Will DVD sell-through was down 17%, Blu-ray sales almost doubled, according to DEG.
