PS3 and PSP Sitting in a Tree...
December 12, 2007
Playstation 3 has long been dogged with criticism that it was Sony's Great Big Mistake, with sales consistently trailing Nintendo's Wii and Xbox 360. Underscoring Sony's shame was that the PS3 boasts more tech muscle than those other guys, with its built-in Blu-ray players. But Howard Stringer, speaking to reporters Tuesday in Tokyo, said PS3 will play a strong role in Sony's continued growth.
He wants to soon kickstart online networking between the console and the company's handheld Playstation Portable. That connection will eventually span to other devices such as mobile phones.
November's launch of of the $399 PS3 seems to have reinvigorated the console. Rising sales of the PS3 should put Sony on target to hit 5% profit margins in March, added Stringer. Since Black Friday, PS3s have moved an additional 200,000 units in the U.S., he said.
