Amazon.com Hugs It Out With HD DVD Customers
March 21, 2008

Amazon.com is throwing its HD DVD customers a bone to help them transition to a Blu-ray frame of mind. If they decide to purchase Samsung's dual format player and two BD titles from the site, Amazon.com will throw in two free HD DVDs as well. Customers can pick from a HD DVD selection featuring Batman Begins, Corpse Bride, among others.
Now this deal might not seem like a deal for most. If anything, a lot of people are going to purchase a relatively more affordable straight Blu-ray player, and don't want HD DVD titles at all.
At $449 on Amazon.com, the Samsung dual format player seems reduced from it pre-HD DVD death pricing. But that still is a premium over format-winning BD players, which are around $399.
Still, Amazon.com sees their Samsung offer as particularly attractive to its HD DVD constituents. Some may want a Blu-ray player, but may also want one that can handle their HD DVD libraries as well.
Amazon.com spokesman Tammy Hovey, said "This offer was targeted to a select group of HD DVD customers, and is one of several benefits we hope to provide our HD DVD customers in the near future."
The offer is valid through April 2.
