Bourne and Potter Break HD DVD Ground
December 6, 2007
First it was e-commerce, and now it's social networking, as far as the 'it' evolution of HD DVD Web-enabled features. Starting with Dec. 11 HD DVD releases The Bourne Ultimatum and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, viewers will be able to share favorite film scenes to other networked HD DVD owners. Essentially a 'leader' sends out a notification to other HD DVD players that he/she wants to share scenes, and if the players' owners accept, then the leader will show off the content to other hardware systems from the comfort of home. But, cry Blu-ray fanboys, "Can't you just take screen shots of Bourne and Potter from your digital camera and post them on your blog for all to see?? Why is this such a big deal?"
Well, to the HD DVD camp, the idea of being able to host a community sharing event opens the door to unprecedented possibilities. Supporters envision directors bowing exclusive film footage to other networked HD DVD users, for instance. But yes, there is nothing like that lined up yet.
The first Blu-ray Web-enabled titles will come in January, with Lionsgate's War and Saw IV. It's not yet clear what Lionsgate has up its sleeve for these films' networking offerings.
