Jones-ing For BD
March 3, 2008

The Indiana Jones films will street on DVD individually for the first time on May 13. Each of the installments, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and the Last Crusade, will come packed with new bonus features. I should be excited by this upcoming product - this is some cool stuff that unusually isn't going to be scrunched into the catch-all fourth quarter. But all I can think about is the absence of a Blu-ray bow for these titles as well.
You'd think this would be the perfect platform for Paramount to say 'Hey, Guys! We're Blu-ray now! Look at what we're putting out for you!'
The studio is likely to go to BD soon, as it's already said that its last HD DVD titles are the ones they release tomorrow on March 4 - Things We Lost in the Fire and Into the Wild.  Also, there was that clause in Paramount's HD DVD contract that excused Spielberg films from necessarily coming out in the format. It suggested to everyone that Spielberg liked Blu-ray. So what is the problem?
Well, there is a second chance for a 2008 BD launch of these classic Indy films. And that would be some time in the fourth quarter (of course!) when Par streets its next Indy theatrical Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on DVD. It premieres on the big screen on May 22.
