LG Says 2nd Gen Dual Format is BD Live
December 10, 2007

Ah, but there's a catch. According to reports, LG's dual format player launching now at retail will only be able to play back Web-enabled titles by way of a future firmware upgrade. And it's not really all that clear when LG is providing that upgrade. But at least there's a darn good chance of a BD Live player finally hitting shelves, timed with the first BD Live titles becoming available in January.
The LG second gen dual player will feature one of the market's few Blu-ray models capable of playing back picture-in-picture interactivity. To date, the only BD player to boast that same capability is Panasonic's third-generation player, which recently rolled out to retail.
Samsung's own dual format player, streeting by year-end, has the machinery to work picture-in-picture, but will also need a firmware upgrade to seal the deal.
