HD VMD Presses On
January 9, 2008
It's tough not to admire the tenacity of the third high-definition format, HD VMD, as its company backer New Medium Enterprises announced a new film content deal today. Note the press release's description of NME as "HD leader," coming days after many signs point to Blu-ray winning over the world.Undaunted by BD and its 85% global hardware penetration over other high-def formats, NME seems to be convincing at least some content suppliers of its worth. SFM Entertainment LLC will be releasing in the HD VMD format several classic films, including Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Robert Conrad-starring Sudden Death, and others. There will also be four TV films based on the series Cagney & Lacey. Harry Potter these are not. But if the noise from the HD DVD camp does start simmering down, I wonder if that will provide a chance for HD VMD to get more attention? Currently, no mainstream U.S. brick-and-mortar chain offers NME's HD VMD hardware. NME sells the hardware domestically at PC Rush and at its own Web site. Players have also popped up for sale by mainly third-party sellers at Amazon.com.
