> Classic thriller receives new high-def transfer and is supplemented by a previously unreleased bonus film.
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, centering on a sweet old lady (Dame May Whitty) who disappears from a crowded train rolling across Europe, has aged quite gracefully and remains a near flawless example of its genre. Thanks to Criterion’s new high-def transfer, it looks and sounds better than ever, and the dazzling array of supplements will make this two-disc set irresistible to genre fans and vintage-film enthusiasts. Of particular interest to the cineaste crowd will be Crooks Tour, a 1941 British feature film built around Lady Vanishes supporting characters Charters and Caldicott (Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne).
Shelf Talk: Let the usual suspects know that one of the Master of Suspense’s most beloved B&W entries has returned! The added bonus of Crooks Tour, a delightful B-movie previously unreleased to home video, will be welcomed with open arms by American movie buffs who know it only by reputation. Another asset worth plugging in this new Criterion edition is “Mystery Train,” a new video essay by well-regarded Hitchcock scholar Leonard Leff.
