Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs DVD, Blu-ray

November 8, 2009

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs might not have huge names in its voicecast or Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks in its producing credits, but Sony's animated movie, based on a popular children's book, grossed $120 million at the box office. And I'll bet a bunch hamburgers, that it'll do very well when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 5 too.

The movie probably would have made a splash in the fourth quarter, but Sony has avoided competition from Up on Nov. 10, G-Force on Dec. 15 (both from Disney) and Universal's 9 on Dec. 29.

Cloudy, which prebooks Dec. 3, will be released as a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD edition ($39.95), a two-DVD set ($34.95), a single DVD ($28.96) and for the PlayStation Portable ($24.94).

On the two-DVD and Blu-ray/DVD editions will come with extras. The two-DVD will include:

  • All the material from the 1-Disc DVD, plus:
  • Featurette: “How Food Falls: The Making of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
  • Featurette: “Voice Off”
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Miranda Cosgrove “Raining Sunshine: Music Video
  • Interactive “Raining Sunshine” Sing-a-Long
  • Food Fight Game

The Blu-ray/DVD will have all that plus:

  • The 1-Disc DVD
  • “Splat Mode!”
  • BD Live Enabled

Although Cloudy doesn't have any huge name stars, it has plenty of voice actors with fan bases: Anna Faris, Bill Hader, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, Benjamin Bratt and Neil Patrick Harris to name a few.

Based on the book by Judy and Ron Barrett, the movie tells the story of a young inventor whose latest machine works a little too well.
