Princess Bride Combo Blu-ray and DVD
February 4, 2009
MGM Home Entertainment will be releasing The Princess Bride on Blu-ray with an included standard DVD copy of the film, on the heels of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment promising the same combo content for many of its upcoming high-definition titles.
Streeting March 17 (pre-orders due Feb. 18) for $34.99, The Princess Bride Blu-ray and DVD combo marks the first such hybrid release for MGM, said a studio spokeswoman. Additional special features within the title include audio commentary by director Rob Reiner, several featurettes and Easter eggs.
Disney announced at January’s Consumer Electronics Show that starting with the March 10 bow of Pinocchio, all its Blu-ray titles will contain standard DVD copies through its October release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. At the time, Disney said that it was including the standard DVDs to increase the utility of the titles by helping families enjoy them on as many devices as possible.
That desire to increase the value of Blu-ray for households is shared by MGM management.
“The Princess Bride is a perennial top-selling title in MGM’s catalogue and a true family favorite that continues to captivate audiences of all ages," said Chris Franchino, associate director of marketing at MGM. "The inclusion of a standard DVD copy with the Blu-ray Disc allows fans to experience the magic of the film in high definition without sacrificing playability on existing standard DVD players in and outside the home.”
