Wal-Mart's High Def Upgrade
May 22, 2007
Last week Wal-Mart promised a renewed focus on electronics and home entertainment products in its stores, particularly HD TVs. I don't know if the Wal-Mart I stopped by today in Arizona has been renovated (I suspect not completely) but it seemed to reinforce what I'd heard from studio sources about it being too early for the nation's top DVD retailer to have much impact on the high definition wars.
For one thing, all the HD TVs at the store I visited were connected to standard definition DVD players, albeit ones with HDMI connections. No HD DVD or Blu-ray players or discs were on sale in the store. There was, however, at least one VCR model on sale. Apparently, the Wal-Mart audience really is just entering the high def era.
Incidentally, while I was roaming through the section, I overheard one Wal-Mart associate tell a customer looking at HD TVs to check out Best Buy. Now would that be part of the customer service training Wal-Mart has been providing electronics associates over the last few months?
