Sony Snips TV Classics for MySpace Crowd
April 30, 2007
In the latest example of a studio throwing ideas at the wall in an attempt to try to find a way to make money in online video, Sony Corp. says it will snip classic TV shows such as Charlie's Angel's to 3-5 minutes for a new Internet video site it will launch in June, dubbed the Minisode Network, the New York Times reports today.
The Minisode Network will run exclusively on MySpace and as Sony TV president Steve Mosko explained to the Times will feature a quick beginning, middle and end from episodes.
“So in ‘Charlie Angels,’ they have a meeting, Charlie’s on the intercom telling them what the assignment is, there’s a couple of fights, and then a chase, and they catch the bad guy. Then they’re back home wrapping it up.”
The idea is to make them campy, he explained. In addition to Charlie's Angels, the studio will put up minisodes of
Starsky and Hutch and
TJ Hooker. So it's kind of the opposite of DVD strategy, where endless features and unseen clips are added in to things.
Sony already offers full episodes of the Angels and other shows streamed free over at AOL for those with more time to waste at work.
