Trust Best Buy, Blu-ray Isn't THAT Expensive
August 14, 2008
Best Buy has a plug in its weekly ad for Blu-ray titles, with the pitch: "Step up to Blu-ray for only $8 more." In the deal,
located on page 5, customers can save on standard definition and Blu-ray versions of titles, amounting to what Best Buy believes is a measly premium for the higher quality edition.
Well when you put it that way, Best Buy, I'll totally buy!
I think that if the chain really wants to make a splash, why not temporarily reduce pricing on Blu-ray so that it's at least the same price as the titles' standard-definition counterparts? Or geez, maybe really go out on a limb, and mark the Blu-rays a dollar or two less for a week.
For a product that retailers and studios are leaning on so heavily to save maturing DVD, you'd think they'd put more oomph in the promotions. Best Buy would probably need some studio support in knocking down Blu-ray prices further than they already are. In this $8 more deal, the standard-definition versions are $14.99, down from $19.99 regular pricing. And Blu-rays are $22.99, representing a mark-down from $29.99 to $34.99.
I would hope that studios and retailers come out with their Blu-ray sales guns blazing during the fourth quarter.
