Toshiba Super Bowl Ad Didn't Score Everywhere
February 4, 2008
It appears that Toshiba's HD DVD Super Bowl TV commercial, a potential Hail Mary pass to pump up the format in light of dropping studio support, didn't air nationally.
A number of blog postings at the AVSForum indicated that people never actually caught the spot. Toshiba wasn't responding to requests for comment.
Watching the game from Los Angeles, I myself saw it twice, once during pre-game programming and once during the first part of the actual game. Like a lot of the Super Bowl ads this year, I thought the Toshiba spot curiously played it safe creatively. The ad just seemed to show the product, state the new low pricing, and then that's about it. I would think the company would try to go for it more with at least talking animals, celeb endorsements, scantily-clad women..or just something to really catch viewers attention.
You can check out the ad, or any of the Super Bowl ads, here. I wonder, though, if in hindisight Toshiba is wishing it had run the ad in more territories. That probably would have cost it more money, on top of the millions it already spent in placing it in the Super Bowl. But there was a huge TV audience overall for the game,
as the gigantic upset win by the Giants over the Patriots delivered the highest ratings for a Super Bowl game yet.
