February 1, 2008
Replicator Sony DADC says it's more than doubling its BD disc capacity in 2008 over last year, boosted by Warner's decision to produce exclusively in the format. You can find the news as part of
this latest MediaTech newsletter geared toward ths the manufacturing community. Over the course of 2008, Sony DADC says it will be able to achieve an annual production capacity of 200 million units worldwide. To accomplish this, Sony DADC says it's hiring an additional 100 employees for its Austrian facilitities. Since 2006, Sony DADC has produced more than 110 million BD Discs worldwide.
I'm not sure if BD demand will get as high as 200 million units in 2008. But I think we definitely need the machinery in place to be prepared for that scenario. Things are looking up for Sony and PS3, as the company is no longer bleeding red ink with high production costs with the game console. For its just ended third quarter,
Sony posted healthy operations income for its video games division, which was a big jump from reporting hundreds of millions in losses for the comparable period in fiscal 2007. Now with some cash in its pockets, Sony can continue to market the heck out of the PS3 to bump up its install base further. Come on Sony, give us a price drop on the PS3 - we know you can afford it now!
