Best Buy lowers Blu-ray set-top price
September 8, 2008

Best Buy has dropped the price of its Insignia-branded Blu-ray set-top player to $229. Wal-Mart sells the same player under the Magnavox brand and has it priced at $278.

Amazon has a Sony player at the same $229 price.

At this rate, sub-$200 Blu-ray players look like a real possibility for the holiday season, and that could be the sweet-spot for mass market adoption of the format.

The Insignia NS-BRDVD is a profile 1.1 BD player, with no internet connection. Which means it is crippled. Then you get the opportunity to purchase titles at $20-$30? And you can't play these titles on your friends DVD player? No thanks. I don't think I would pay $100 for it.
