Blu-ray Meets 3D
September 10, 2008
Philips will be demo-ing 3D on Blu-ray at the upcoming conference IBC 2008, running Sept. 12-16, in Amsterdam. That's not all, either. Philips will be showing off 3D VOD with the help of telecommunications company Telefonica.
If this goes well, Blu-ray will somehow offer even higher quality video than 1080p, right? It's pristine video, and images will continue to pop off the screen. But this time...Whoa, Duck! The images might hit you in the face.
I exaggerate, for sure. But that's kind of how I feel when I'm watching a movie in 3D. I think 3D would have to be a boon for the format - potentially giving viewers something truly different from watching standard definition DVD.
In the press release, Philips doesn't really go into the technology inner workings involved in crafting a 3D Blu-ray experience. However, 3D seems to be a critical part of Philips' future home entertainment strategy.
Here's a quote from Philips CEO Jos Swillens:
"Easy distribution of 3D content over existing infrastructures will be the key factor for the succeses of 3D TV. Our demos at IBC 2008 prove the flexibility and effeciency of our 2D-plus-Depth content format that will eventually enable 3D viewing in people's homes."
