And the Winner Is...Howards End

June 5, 2009 It looks like Criterion Collection has tallied up the votes for its next Blu-ray release, and people have chose Howards End
Thanks to Blu-ray.com for catching the Howards End pre-order post on Amazon.com. The site is selling the title for $29.99, reasonable for a Criterion effort. A street date hasn't yet been specified.
A while ago, I wrote about Amazon.com hosting the Criterion Collection vote, suggesting other studios would be wise to try something similar. Studios need consumers to be invested in what is released on Blu-ray to break the format into the mainstream. What better way to do that than to let them pick what comes out, right?
And I think consumers would have some good ideas, or at least as good as the studios. To me, studios can make questionable choices on what library titles they release on Blu-ray. (Just scroll down to the next post!)
I think people got it right with Howards End. There's stars Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter. The movie was nominated for nine Oscars, and won three including a Best Actress trophy for Thompson. That's not too shabby!
Hopefully, Howards End will be a hit for Criterion, and other studios will take notice. I say bring on the Blu-ray vote.

It's a fine movie, but I wish PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK had won.
