HDTV Touchdown
January 25, 2008

This Super Bowl is expected to generate sales of 2.4 million high-def TV sets, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. That can only be a good news for accompanying high-def hardware, especially BD set-tops which have been so heavily promoted of late as part TV bundle deals. If just 25% of those sales are among the 'get this TV and get a BD player for free,' then that could mean the format's hardware install base could jump by 600,000 units, if my math is correct.
For three years now, the Super Bowl - not Christmas/Hanukkuh or other gift-giving holidays - has claimed the top driver for HD TV sets, according to the CEA. The Super Bowl is already credited for churning out $2.2 billion in high-def TV sales. Other important sporting events that boost HD TV sales, include college bowl games, the World Series, NBA Finals, and NCAA March Madness.
I'll bet the Super Bowl might have proved an even bigger draw for high-def sales, had some team other than the Giants gotten in to play the Patriots. Sorry, Giants fans! But I can't see the team providing much of a challenge to Brady and company. If the Colts, Cowboys or even the Packers had managed to squeeze in...then, we'd really see those HD TVs flying off shelves!

It should be noted that HD DVD has an ad in the superbowl this year. They should have coupled that with a free player with each TV sold.

Giants hare in New York they have the biggest draw in the country. Everyone will show up to see if the Ginats can beat the Patriots. The Giants haven't lost a game since they lost to the Patriots 38-35. The "G" Men can play, and they might surprise everyone.
