Flowers And Blu for Mom
May 2, 2008
Amazon.com is singling out Blu-ray titles as great gifts for Mom come Mother's Day on May 11.
In a consumer e-newsletter featuring new release BD titles, Amazon.com has slotted a banner suggesting these discs make perfect presents for Mom.
After linking through, the site highlights a number a chick-flicks on BD, including
Enchanted,
27 Dresses,
P.S. I Love You and
Becoming Jane.
I think it's refreshing to see women being embraced in some Blu marketing for a change. For some time now, format advertising seems to be dominated by dude-targeted Playstation 3. I don't think we need to lessen the PS3 ads, because at this point it is the best value proposition for people to adopt Blu-ray. You get gaming and BD player for the price of a BD player alone.
But format backers need to start thinking about spreading their marketing wings from time to time, so as not to needlessly cut off some consumers who would be interested in ramping up their home theater systems.
Not that we don't love Mom, but buying a BD player is probably too steep a gift for many to afford. But if the family already has a BD player, I say it's smart to reinforce the idea that BD titles can be gifts, just like standard DVDs have become popular presents over time.
