Sony's $299 PS3 Ad Is Actually Funny

August 28, 2009 Sony is having some fun with us in its ad blitz for the upcoming $299 PS3 Slim. There's a refreshing, self-deprecating air about them, which I think will be helpful in boosting sales. In past campaigns, Sony has treated its PS3 like a super serious art installation - pretty, but kinda boring as well.
One spot plays up the fact that the $299 price tag is an incredibly badly kept secret. It stars a Sony 'director of rumor confirmation' who ridiculously tries to shut down speculation that the PS3 is yes, $299. Swirling all around him are giant posters advertising the $299 price.
Another shows a woman complaining that her man hasn't hooked up the PS3 to the Web and is missing all sorts of fun content, such as movie and video game downloads.
Gizmodo.com has helpfully posted video spots here.
Sony really needs to boost PS3 sales right now. Its banking on high volume to offset production losses with the lower price tag. I say irreverant ad campaign should help spark interest in PS3s.
In other good news, the reviews of the Blu-ray player inside the $299 PS3 seem mostly positive. One criticism is that the loading time for discs are slower than the Blu-ray player inside previous $399 PS3 models. But reviewers gives thumbs up to lower power consumption and reduced noise. Blu-ray.com gathers some reviews here.
