Walk Harder For BD Live
March 27, 2008
Sony has put together a cute mini-site for the April 8 standard DVD and BD release Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Currently featured on the Amazon.com main Blu-ray movie page, the site features exclusive video of Walk Hard stars talking about their experiences on set. You can also download themed wallpaper and watch clips from the film. There are links to pre-order the movie as well.
All of this is great fun, but I can't help but think that something big is missing. There is zero mention of BD Live. This strikes me as odd because Sony made a big deal in a recent press release that Walk Hard and The 6th Day will represent the studio's first BD Live titles. Their launch coincides with Playstation 3's upgrade to being able handle playback of such Web-enabled discs. This PS3 upgrade, by way of a firmware update, should be available by the end of this month.
If this microsite was in a standard DVD area of Amazon.com, that would be one thing. But if you're marketing it in a retailer's Blu-ray section, it seems to make sense to hype all that is neat about the BD version.
One possibility for the BD Live silence is that Sony might have been developing the site before it knew for a fact that Playstation 3 would get its act together and make the BD Live upgrade available. Sony executives had been expecting and expecting and expecting this PS3 enhancement for some time. And I wouldn't blame them for holding off on the BD Live mentions until PS3 for sure, for sure makes that BD Live available.
