Disney's 'Sleeping' on BD Live
March 24, 2008
With last week's welcome news that Playstation 3 is finally going to be able to play BD Live titles, I thought we'd see Web-enabled titles sooner rather than later. The dominant type of BD adopter,
the PS3 owner, will be able to play back Web-enabled bonus features starting this month.
But Disney's first BD Live title continues to be the October 7 release of
Sleeping Beauty, which was announced back at January's Consumer Electronics Show. The studio today confirmed the June and July BD releases of
The Recruit,
Signs and
Gangs of New York - but nope, none will boast Web interactivity.
A rep for the studio explained that Disney wants to put all their resources into making
Sleeping Beauty a BD Live smash. Other BD Live titles will follow at some point, but
Sleeping Beauty will be Disney's first.
Eventually, I think BD Live, or just BD-exclusive bonus features in general, will have to become a key part to catalog titles in the format. For some people, pristine video and audio quality probably isn't quite enough to push them into buying titles they might already own, like Disney's June 3 BD releases of
The Recruit and
Signs and July 1 title
Gangs of New York.
