Best Buy Shaves $20 Off Insignia: YES
July 16, 2008

A little sarcasm there - but I think these new Blu-ray set-tops will have to start dipping more towards the $250-200 mark before people start really noticing.  True, Best Buy's $329 Insignia, down from $349 in June, is one of the cheapest latest generation set-tops available at retail. The only one lower is Wal-Mart's $298 Magnavox, which is in fact holding the same Funai-built machinery as the Insignia.
But with Sony announcing at E3 that it is knocking a couple hundred of its 80GB Playstation 3 so that it is the same $399 price as its smaller-capacity 40 GB PS3, the set-top community needs to come up with up with something bigger than $20 dollars in savings. It's tough to beat the value in the $399 80GB PS3 - gaming system, Blu-ray player, plus access to film downloads at Sony's Playstation Store.
